"On May 18, the Kalamazoo Gazette ran an article on the front page noting that Ohio Valley Gold and Silver Refinery was going to be at the Clarion hotel in Kalamazoo to provide an "opportunity" to turn gold and silver into cash.
My nephew and I went to the Clarion with silver quarters to trade in; however, the offered exchange was $8 per ounce, which seemed low since on that day, silver was being traded at about $19 an ounce.
We decided to take our quarters and shop locally. This turned out to be a most fortunate decision, as J &R Coins and Jewelry gave us $16 an ounce. It's nice to be able to do business locally, and this time it was extra rewarding.
In the future, maybe more consideration could be given to Kalamazoo merchants."
